Shenfield AFC vs Runwell Sports

Shenfield were looking to bounce back from a damaging defeat to Great Baddow which had left Kevin Williamson questioning some of his player’s desire. In many respects this was the perfect game as Runwell sat bottom of the league due to a manager and player re-shuffle.

Shenfield started strongly and on the front foot no doubt with the manager’s team talk still ringing loudly in their ears. The game ebbed and flowed at a frantic pace for the first five minutes until Will Marlowe found some space on the right wing, after beating one defender the striker managed to get his head up and struck a low cross into the area for Ben Absolon to neatly strike the ball home. Boyed by Shenfield’s quick start Sam Bubb and Ben Absolon were linking up to great effect down the left hand side however after some near misses from Shenfield it quickly became 2 -0 when Will Marlowe connected beautifully with his head, Runwell’s keeper did get a slight touch to the ball but the power being too much the ball nestled in the top right corner of the goal. To Runwell’s credit they did not give up and still tried to play football however the combative nature of both Luke Williamson and Sam Lock in the middle of midfield nullified any attack of concern. The corner count kept rising for Shenfield and on the half hour mark a great ball from Josh Sumner found Will Marlowe unmarked in the 6 yard box, there was only ever going to be one result. 3-0. There was a great understanding between the front four of Shenfield especially in the first half, playing some intricate passing in between the lines and it was no surprise it soon became 4-0, Jimmy Brett’s off target shot soon became a great through-ball as Josh Sumner gambled to slot the ball in the near post to score his first goal of the afternoon.

Half Time Shenfield AFC 4 – 0 Runwell Sports.

The second half understandably started off with a temporary lack of action, Shenfield were keeping the ball well albeit with little penetration. This all changed on the 60-minute mark when some good work on the right hand side from Tom Blackmur found Will Marlow’s feet and after a neat turn threaded the ball to Josh Sumner who made it 5-0. Will Marlowe, Luke Williamson & Ben Absolon all had chances to make the score-line look even more emphatic. The game seemed to be fizzling to its conclusion with the result known for some time now, however with 5 minutes of the game left to play a lack of concentration from Shenfield allowed Runwell’s striker to score a consolation goal, this was the only black mark on what was a near perfect performance from Shenfield.
